The kids are working really hard on their distinguished reader program! We have several people who have already finished!! My goal is to have 100% of our class finish and earn the celebratory activity!! :)
Thanks for sending in snacks! We should be good for this week, but will be needing more after Thanksgiving break. If you haven't sent any for a while, please send them in with your child anytime. Thanks.
Congratulations to our students: Amanda, Carter, Jonny, Kylie and Savannah
These kids have passed their multiplication facts and have moved on to division facts!!! If your child is still working to pass multiplication, please help them out by reviewing facts for a short time each night. Thanks!!
Today marked the end to the first part of the mayor's food challenge. Thank you for helping by sending in non-perishable food items. We will find out tomorrow which class will help the mayor light the town Christmas tree. The next part of the contest starts tomorrow. This time the winning class will get a pizza party with the mayor! You can start sending items in tomorrow!
November 10th
Don't forget picture retakes are Thursday if your child needs them.
***We are completely out of snacks!! If you could send some in, the kids would really appreciate it :)
We are wrapping up our chapter on division and will be taking the test this week. Some of the kids are still needing a lot of practice with multiplication facts. We have four students who have moved on to division facts :)
Don't forget we are doing the Mayor's challenge food drive. If you are able to, please send non-perishable food items to school.

Breaking News!! There will be no school tomorrow, Nov. 3rd See email from the district office!
Thank you to everyone who helped out in some way with the Halloween party last Friday. The kids had fun and there were plenty of treats for all! This week will be our 5th grade music program. It is Thursday night at 7:30 for our class here at TES. The kids should arrive at 7:15 and it sounds like the music teachers would like them to head down to the 5th grade hall to get in their line order. Please keep their coats with you as they will not be coming back down to the room after the concert is over.
We have moved on to the next chapter in math (division with 2 digit divisors). If your child is still working on passing their multiplication facts PLEASE work on these a little each night. It is making a huge difference for those who are practicing!!
Needed
Please send in snacks! We are out!! Also, if you have a spare 1inch binder that you don't need please send it in for your child to use as an interactive writing book. You will get it back at the end of the year! Thanks!!

If you haven't already, please send the fundraiser packets back to school tomorrow!
Hopefully our fundraiser went well and we will be able to purchase more things for our playground!!
Don't forget homework folders are due back at school tomorrow. Make sure you sign the bottom of your child's reading log so they get full credit :)
Most of the kids have started working on their distinguished reader books. Some have even taken the AR quiz over their first book!! Please ask your child where they are in this process. I sent home a graph yesterday that you can use at home if you'd like to keep track of your child's progress.
**If your child never brought in a pair of headphones off the school supply list, they will need to bring a pair to school. Now that we are using our classroom computers as part of our daily routine, they will have an opportunity to work on a variety of reading and math programs on the computer, but they need headphones to do so. Thanks!!
Have a wonderful week!!

Thank you for coming to parent teacher conferences. It is always nice to get to talk to all of you about your children! Hopefully, we now have everyone receiving an email when this blog page is updated!!
We will not be taking a spelling test this week due to parent teacher conferences. The new list will come home in homework folders on Friday as usual. Don't forget the new reading logs will also be in the homework folders this week.
Distinguished Reader has begun as well! I will be asking the kids to check out their first book from the library this week. Remember that they may read these books here at school and at home. They will most likely need to read them at both places to be able to finish all 6 books by the December 11th deadline :)!

Don't forget your child will be attending the KC Symphony tomorrow. We will load buses about 8:50 and are supposed to return about 11:45. It could be cool there so they may want a jacket :)
I look forward to seeing everyone at conferences this week. If you haven't already, please fill out and return the pre-conference page that came home Friday. The 15 minutes will go very fast so I want to make sure I cover any concerns you have. Thanks!

We are busy as usual trying to fit in everything we have to cover in class! We took our Chapter 5 math test today, so look for those to come home later this week. I'm hoping everyone did great so we can get started on our next chapter tomorrow. We will begin Chapter 2 (we will not be covering the math chapters in order!) and will be studying multiplication. It will cover topics like prime factorization and exponents!!
I have asked the students to remind you to please check over their homework before they turn the folders in on Wednesday. We are having a lot of papers with very low grades on homework assignments and we won't always have time during the day to redo/reteach this work. I do have a couple of parents who have kindly offered to start coming in and helping kids with this work, but please help us keep this work manageable by checking it at home before it gets graded. Thank you!
Don't forget to practice math facts at home. All of the kids are working in multiplication right now.
We are starting to run low on snacks. Thank you to everyone who has been sending in things on occasion. We probably have enough to get us through the next week. The kids are not wanting to eat the fruit snacks very well! They really like granola bars, crackers (like fish crackers, cheezits, vanilla wafers, etc). Thanks for your help, they really like the snacks!! Also, we are out of the snack size (quart size are too big) ziplocs to put the crackers in. If you could send in a box of those as well we would really appreciate it.

Last week was busy and went out with a drippy bang. We are hoping to make up for it with the parade today! Hopefully the weather will cooperate this time! The kids are working hard and with mid quarter progress reports going home this week, many are trying to get papers finished or fixed. Kids always have an opportunity to fix a low grade, but it sometimes takes some time for them to redo it, me to regrade it and get it in the computer. Be patient if you see a missing grade in Skyward or if the grade is a 0, as it takes a little while if a child is gone for them to get things turned in and for it to be graded. On that note, PLEASE make sure you are reviewing your child's homework pages before they return them. These pages are always graded and many of the kids are getting very low grades on them. Please help them fix the problems before they return the pages. Otherwise, they are just practicing the wrong skills!
Here is a little about what we did in each subject area:
Reading: We are continuing our novel study with the book The War With Grandpa.
We have also finished and shared our theme posters. I think the kids had a lot of fun working on this project and learned about working on a team.
Language Arts: spelling, journal writing, simple subjects and simple predicates, sentence fragments and compound sentences
Math: We are working on chapter 5 on adding and subtracting decimals
Science: We are continuing our study of scientific method. Did your child tell you about our soap and marshmallow experiment or the results of our banana experiment? If not, ask them about it!
Social Studies: the land and early people (projects due to Ms. Franey on the 28th)
Have a great week!!
